Characterization of Contaminated Sites

Characterization of Contaminated Sites Geovariances has acquired a unique experience in the characterization of chemical contaminations through many industrial projects for Areva, Charbonnages de France, EDF, GDF Suez, Total and various consulting offices.

- Pollution mapping

  • Organic contaminations in former industrial sites, gasworks, coal-fired power station, petroleum deposits, etc.
  • Hydrocarbon in the floating phase below former industrial sites
  • Characterization of the organic/inorganic geochemical background on former industrial sites,
  • Radiological contamination: contaminated parcels, waste tips, contaminated concrete.

- Sampling campaigns guidance / Investigation protocol

Sampling strategy in radio-contaminated concrete
  • Quantification of uncertainty and complementary investigations guidance in order to reach the precision objective
  • Comparison of sampling and analysis protocols

- Quantification of the contaminated volumes

During the remediation of a polluted site, errors about contaminated areas assessment may lead to serious sanitary and financial consequences. Because geostatistics are based on probabilistic models, they are appropriate for assessing contamination risks.

The stochastic simulations allow to calculate a probability to exceed a threshold of pollution. This probability accounts for the mesh size of the cleaning technique and the remediation objectives. They provide the probabilistic distribution of the contaminated volumes. The amount of soil to clean up as well as its location are directly deduced from the risk one accepts of leaving spoiled blocks in place.

Geovariances has extensive experience with these issues:

  • Accurate and reliable estimation of the volumes to be cleaned up in contaminated soils or concrete,
  • Supervision and validation of geostatistical projects performed by engineering offices.

- Property projects guidance

Geostatistics give the essential figures to base your financial negotiations on evidence.

Geovariances can help you in the framework of economic feasibility study:

  • Estimation of the backfill volumes to be excavated and stocked,
  • Future facilities site optimization according to the remediation objectives.
